Singer 5400 Review [Updated July 2018]

Singer 5400 Review

In this Singer 5400 review, we determined this product to be an economical sewing machine with a surprisingly high number of features and functions, considering its price. Even though it's mostly suited for casual seamstresses, advanced users could find it useful as well.

Whether you are a seasoned seamstress or someone who has never used a sewing machine and isn't connected to sewing in any way, it's highly unlikely you haven't heard of Singer. With over 160 years of experience, Singer is certainly no stranger to quality sewing machines in every price range you can think of.

Because they make sure that every model they design, no matter how low-budget it is, is created to last for years and excel at what it's meant for, Singer became one of the most popular brands in the world.

Criteria For A Great Sewing Machine

There are more and more available sewing machines on the market, which is great because the prices are competitive, but it can also make choosing a perfect model for you a difficult task. If you're looking to buy your very first sewing machine, it could take you a while to find the right machine for you, especially if you are not all that familiar with the terminology and what exactly makes a good sewing machine.

If you are buying your first sewing machine, do not get tempted and buy an expensive, flashy sewing machine with an overwhelming amount of built-in stitches and presser feet. Especially if you don't know what a presser foot is. You may get frustrated  and your fashion design career could stall before it even started.

Even if you want to immediately start sewing evening gowns for a movie premiere, take a step back and carefully evaluate your knowledge and abilities. It is better to start with a basic, low-budget sewing machine that will slowly, introduce you to the world of sewing machines. Try to look for one with detailed instructions as they will be your best friend, although, for many models there are video tutorials online as well.

Depending on your needs, an inexpensive but reliable sewing machine might be everything you need so there is no need to spend money on a better one.

Product Overview

The Singer 5400 is one of the cheapest computerized sewing machines on the market, it's considered a great buy by many Singer 5400 reviews.

For that price, you get a respectable number of built-in stitches, basic presser feet and a whole lot of accessories. Even though the number of features and functions of Singer 5400 might overwhelm you if you are a beginner, this model is still easy enough to master.

Some of the features include:

  • 60 different pattern with the usual basic and stretch stitches, as well as 40 decorative stitches and 4 different buttonhole stitches
  • automatically adjusted length and width of stitches
  • automatically holds stitches in balance no matter what the type of the fabric you are working with
  • automatic needle threader which will save you a lot of time and frustrations
  • intuitive LCD screen

 SINGER 5400 review

Even though this is not the most basic model you can find, it's still good for complete beginners. Many Singer 5400 sewing machine reviews praise its intuitiveness and manuals that are well written. And since it offers more than just basic features, this model could last you for a while and you won't  need to upgrade it for a very long time.

When comparing Singer 5400 with other sewing machines in its price range, this model offers considerably more when it comes to built-in stitches. Four different buttonhole styles is something that even sewing machines that are twice as expensive don't offer.

60 different patterns are more than enough for your everyday repairs and alterations, with enough decorative stitches to create beautiful art projects or various embellished garments.

Considering the price, Singer 5400 is incredibly automated and will save you lots of time, with it's heavy-metal frame will make sure that the machine solidly stays in place.

The biggest disadvantage of this model is that doesn't handle heavy fabrics, such as denim  that well. But that's an issue with every other model in this price range, and even with some more expensive models

Another thing that might bother you is that you have to load a bobbin from the front, which is a bit trickier than loading it from the top. It's not a major issue, but it can be frustrating at times.
